Depression is a rather delicate medical pathology to treat given its purely mental, emotional and, ultimately, psychological origin. Of the millions of women who suffer from this disease throughout the world, about thirty percent of them do not respond adequately to classic treatments such as psychological therapies or specific medication. According to research carried out in Denmark, it seems that the solution to this problem could be through the use of a helmet-shaped device that sends electromagnetic impulses and attacks all those cells that do not function correctly in the brain.
The solution to depression in the form of a helmet
- Of all the volunteers who tried this method during the course of the investigation, around 65% stated that their symptoms had disappeared and that, after a week, they had begun to appreciate substantial improvements in their mood. Although during the period in which these tests were carried out, the depressed patients continued to take their usual medication, it must be said that it seems a rather hopeful method given some results that cry out for optimism. And more taking into account that the only side effect that has been detected to date consists of a slight and occasional nausea that disappears once the treatment is finished.
- The reason why the scientists involved think that this helmet has worked so well in curing the symptoms that accompany suffering from depression is that the device simulates the electrical signals that go to the brain. Impulses that activate capillaries in the brain, forming new blood vessels and secreting growth hormones. On the other hand, during the tests it was also discovered that thanks to this new treatment, patients with these diseases had a greater tolerance towards antidepressant drugs.
- It seems that this could be a fairly effective treatment that could replace the controversial electroconvulsive therapy, which has been applied to severely depressed patients for more than seventy years. If we continue to obtain positive results in the tests of this helmet, we could be talking about one of the most revolutionary therapies for the treatment of this pathology.
